Precision Agriculture

We have all read how integrating drones in precision agriculture will save farmers time an money by allowing farmers to improve their yields, apply fertilizer, water and chemicals only to areas needed, monitor crop health, reduce costs associated with manned aircraft and reduce the time needed to collect data not only on a sample of a crop, but on the entire field. The question really isn’t are there benefits to using drones in agriculture, but how best to integrate drones into your operations. Many still view airborne lidar applications through the use of fixed wing pilot aircraft. While manned aircraft can cover larger distances in one flight, the high cost of renting LiDAR equipped aircraft, pilots, lidar trained engineers has kept the use of this extremely useful technology pretty much to the minimum.  Only big money and big budgets could afford to use airborne LiDAR systems regularly. With the tremendous improvements in drone technology, drones are enabling aerial surveying where it was either not possible due to the site location, or simply was not economically feasible.

Lidar, (Light Detection and Ranging) by definition is a remote sensing method which uses pulsed laser light to measure ranges (variable or changing distances) to the Earth.  The lidar instrument fires rapid pulses of laser light at a surface, some at up to 150,000 pulses per second. SkyGen’s 32 laser LiDAR system offers unparalleled resolution and accuracy of up to 110 data points per square meter at a resolution of +/- 1cm providing cost effective means to acquire surveys with accuracies of 1-2cm, and even sub-centimeter.

Application of LiDAR, with it’s additional ability of penetrating dense canopy and vegetation, allows the capture of square kilometers in a single day with 80-110+ data per square meter as opposed to manned aerial LiDAR of 4 point per square meter. The end products offer unparalleled precision allowing 3D models to be used in any planning, design and decision making processes across multiple business sectors.

Exploration, Oil & Gas

Working in the mining, oil and gas industries requires incredible attention to worker safety. Using drone/UAV technology to collect spatial information and conduct inspections of key equipment can significantly reduce the risk to employees working on the site.

Aerial data collection can improve overall operation productivity by reducing the need to stop operations to conduct surveys or inspect equipment, while at the same time providing higher resolution images and more accurate data then terrestrial based systems and in less time then traditional surveying and inspection processes.

In accident situations, drones can be used to measure and quantify oil spills, determine how the oil is moving in water and provide information and imagery to the command center. 

Infrared (IR) imaging can be extremely helpful to survey oil spills making it easier to see where the oil is spreading. This critical information increases the situational awareness of first responders to the incident, increasing safety and the ability to make better decisions in the clean-up planning efforts.

SkyGen’s Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) cameras detect infrared radiation (non-visible to the human eye), typically emitted from a heat source (thermal radiation), to create a “picture”. Normal cameras are dependent on light to produce an image whereas these thermal imagers, a.k.a. infrared cameras, create images through minimal temperature differences able of highlighting the smallest of details.

Uses are wide and varied and include valuable information about: electrical equipment, fuse connections, cables, high voltage equipment (transformers, power lines), building maintenance, Search & Rescue for ease of locating individuals or groups of people in remote or difficult to access areas, measurement of livestock health, and many more.

SkyGen’s FLIR/IR cameras enable reduced risk to employees through traditional methods of inspection such as elevated photography tripods and lifts with HD video downlinks, and onboard recording capable of sending live thermal images to monitors for real time intelligence. Our FLIR cameras can be deployed at any time of the day as your business needs demand.
